Hell Maiden Beginner Guide
Hell Maiden combines automatic attacks with manual aiming and active dodging. Keep moving, collect experience, build a four-Weapon hand, strengthen those weapons with Mod Cards, and preserve enough health and mobility for the boss encounter after the survival timer.
Move and Aim at the Same Time
Dante attacks automatically, but you control the direction of her attacks with the mouse cursor or controller aim input. Circle around enemy groups and point attacks into the densest part of each wave instead of standing still.
Keep enemies on one side of Dante so experience drops remain easy to collect.
Use the Dash to Cross Enemy Lines
The dash lets Dante pass through dangerous gaps without taking damage. Use it to escape surrounding enemies, cross projectile patterns, or leave a Temple area after activating it.
Do not spend every dash on normal movement; keep one available for elites and boss telegraphs.
Collect Experience and Choose Cards
Defeated enemies drop experience orbs that increase Dante's level. Level-up choices can add Weapon Cards, attach Mod Cards, or strengthen effects already present in the hand.
Collect nearby experience regularly instead of leaving large groups of orbs behind the enemy wave.
Build a Four-Weapon Hand
Your hand can hold four Weapon Cards. Fill the empty slots while keeping one preferred weapon as the main damage source, then attach Mods that improve damage, projectile count, attack speed, status effects, or survivability.
Avoid filling every slot with unrelated effects before your main weapon has useful Mods.
Merge Duplicate Mod Cards
Identical Mod Cards can be combined into stronger versions, with Level 3 serving as an important build milestone. Some Mods also strengthen weapons according to their position, so rearrange the hand whenever a positional effect changes.
Merge duplicates on the weapon doing the most damage rather than spreading weak copies across the entire hand.
Activate Temples During the Run
Temples provide additional run progression and appear throughout each Circle. Explore while the waves are manageable, activate different Temple types, and work toward activating 12 Temples in a single run.
Visit Temples early and mid-run; late waves make long detours much more dangerous.
Survive Limbo and Defeat Queen Minos
Circle 1 requires Dante to survive for 12 minutes before its final encounter. Enter the boss sequence with a complete Weapon hand, upgraded Mods, a ready Spell, and enough health to handle Queen Minos's projectile patterns and telegraphed area attacks.
First-session route: collect experience, fill Weapon slots, focus one Level 3 Mod stack, activate nearby Temples, rescue available Poets, survive 12 minutes, then use dashes and Dante's Spell during Queen Minos's most restrictive patterns.
Quick Tips
- Dante attacks automatically — your job is aiming, dodging, and positioning.
- Fill all four Weapon slots early so every level-up can add Mods instead of empty slots.
- Merge duplicate Mod Cards toward Level 3 on your strongest Weapon.
- Activate Temples early and mid-run while waves are still manageable.
- Rescue every Poet you can reach to expand your permanent card pool.
Hell Maiden Best Builds and Spirit Cards
Spirit Cards are divided into Weapon Cards and Mod Cards. A dependable build normally concentrates its strongest upgrades on one signature Weapon, uses the remaining slots for complementary attacks, and merges duplicate Mods toward Level 3 instead of collecting many weak effects.
Focused Damage Build
Direct damage, elites, and reliable Limbo clears
Positioning: Place the core Weapon beside any Mod or Weapon effect that strengthens adjacent cards or cards positioned to its right.
Build Plan: Choose one core Weapon early, merge its duplicate Mods, and work toward equipping three Level 3 Mods on that Weapon. Use secondary Weapon slots for coverage rather than competing damage investments.
Spell Use: Save Dante's Inferno or Horace's Spell for dense waves and boss phases that restrict movement.
Projectile Pressure Build
Large enemy groups and continuous screen coverage
Positioning: Use the two middle Weapon slots for cards with adjacent bonuses so one positional effect can support more than one attack.
Build Plan: Increase the number and frequency of attacks first, then add damage after the screen is consistently covered. Merge duplicate projectile Mods instead of placing low-level copies on every Weapon.
Spell Use: Virgil's Star Sign Pleiades provides a powerful emergency attack when normal projectiles cannot open a safe path.
Status Control Build
Controlling fast waves while dealing damage through repeated hits
Positioning: Attach status-focused Mods to fast or multi-hit Weapons and keep one separate Weapon dedicated to immediate damage.
Build Plan: Spread status application across two Weapons, but concentrate raw damage Mods on a single finisher. This prevents the hand from becoming dependent on effects that take time to build.
Spell Use: Use a Poet's Spell after status effects have gathered enemies or during an elite wave that is difficult to contain.
Survival Clear Build
First clears, Temple exploration, and low-healing challenges
Positioning: Keep the safest crowd-clearing Weapon in the main supported position and use secondary slots for protection and coverage.
Build Plan: Secure consistent area damage before investing fully in boss damage. Visit Temples while enemy pressure is low, avoid unnecessary contact damage, and preserve the dash for enclosed situations.
Spell Use: Treat the Spell as a defensive reset when Dante is surrounded rather than using it immediately after it becomes available.
Boss-Focused Build
Queen Minos, Scarmiglione, Libicocco, and other high-health targets
Positioning: Give the core boss Weapon the strongest positional bonuses and keep crowd-clearing Weapons in the remaining slots for summoned enemies.
Build Plan: Winged Lyric attacks one target at a time without missing, making it suited to sustained pressure on elites and bosses. Codex Amoris supports Ovid-focused Lust clears, while Blazing Quill can complete both available Circles.
Spell Use: Wait for the boss to finish a movement-heavy pattern, then activate the signature Spell while the target remains inside the attack area.
Hell Maiden Limbo and Lust Walkthrough
Every Circle combines enemy waves, quests, Temples, Poet rescues, card building, and a final boss challenge. Complete optional objectives while waves are still manageable, then stop taking long detours once your hand is ready for the final minutes.
Circle 1: Limbo
Survive for 12 minutesObjectives
- Collect experience and fill all four Weapon slots
- Attach and merge Mod Cards
- Activate available Temple types
- Complete Limbo quests and rescue Horace and Homer
- Survive the 12-minute wave timer
- Defeat Queen Minos
Recommended Setup: Use Blazing Quill, Wayfinder, Carpe Diem, or Winged Lyric as the core Weapon. Enter the boss encounter with at least one heavily upgraded Weapon, useful crowd coverage, and a ready Spell.
Boss Tips: Queen Minos uses bullet-hell projectiles and telegraphed area attacks. Move around the edge of dangerous zones, dash only when a safe lane closes, and activate the Spell during patterns that force enemies and projectiles into a narrow area.
Rewards: Clearing Limbo advances the story, opens further Poet dialogue, supports the rescue of Horace and Homer, and leads toward unlocking Circle 2.
Unlock Circle 2: Lust
Progression unlockRequirements
- Complete Limbo's survival objective
- Defeat Queen Minos
- Continue the Forum story and Poet interactions
- Select Lust after the Winds of Desire progression unlock
Preparation: Use additional runs in Limbo to unlock more Poet cards, complete dialogue, improve familiarity with positional Mods, and practice reaching the boss with limited healing.
Recommended Goal: Build a complete Weapon and Mod hand before entering Lust so its faster enemies and elite waves do not interrupt early deck development.
Boss Tips: Treat extra Limbo clears as practice for arriving at a boss with a fully developed hand and limited healing resources.
Rewards: Unlocking Lust grants Winds of Desire and opens the second Circle's Poet, enemies, and bosses.
Circle 2: Lust
Survive for 12 minutesObjectives
- Stabilize the build before elite Vipers and Succubi appear
- Continue activating Temples without becoming surrounded
- Rescue Ovid and unlock the Codex Amoris card line
- Survive the 12-minute wave timer
- Defeat Scarmiglione
- Defeat the Libicocco and Scarmiglione encounter
Recommended Setup: Bring a combination of crowd control and focused boss damage. Projectile or status builds help manage Lust's dense waves, while a Level 3 Mod stack and saved Spell provide the damage needed for its final encounters.
Boss Tips: Keep moving laterally during telegraphed attacks, clear summoned threats before they block escape routes, and avoid using every dash during the opening pattern. Use the signature Spell once the boss pair is grouped or committed to an attack.
Rewards: Lust progression adds Ovid, Codex Amoris, further story chapters, additional dialogue, and abilities earned from the Circle's defeated bosses.

Hell Maiden Bosses and Elite Enemies
Early Access includes two complete Circles with major boss encounters, named elite targets, and distinct enemy families. Boss victories expand the ability pool, while elite kills and repeated clears unlock dedicated Steam achievements.
Attack Pattern: Queen Minos cycles through several clearly telegraphed arena attacks. The launch hotfix reduced how often she can repeat the same move in quick succession, so players must read a changing sequence instead of relying on one fixed loop.
Recommended Counter: Keep moving around the outer part of the arena, preserve the dash for committed attacks, and deal damage during the recovery window after each telegraph. Avoid spending every escape option while normal enemies or projectiles are still occupying the route ahead.
Preparation: Enter with a complete Weapon and Mod setup, at least one reliable area-clearing weapon, upgraded damage Mods, and a Poet Spell ready for a crowded or unsafe phase.
Victory Reward: Defeating Queen Minos unlocks Soul Magister. Three separate victories unlock Taboo Arts I, and major boss wins add two new abilities to the permanent card pool.
Hell Maiden Progression and Resources
Progression combines in-run leveling and deck building with Early Access meta-progression. The strongest route is to unlock Poets and their cards first, clear each Circle consistently, then chase rare Charms, high scores, complete card collections, and challenge achievements.
Temples
Inside a runHigh during every runTemples are activated while exploring a Circle and provide run-based benefits. The achievement list confirms multiple Temple types and enough distinct Temples to activate 12 in one run.
Milestone: Activate all available Temple types for Devout Pilgrim and 12 different Temples in one run for Pious Pilgrim.
Charms
Run preparation and rewardsKeep strong general-purpose bonuses firstCharms provide rarity-based bonuses that strengthen a run. Crystal is a confirmed rarity tier and is tied to one of the rarer progression achievements.
Milestone: Obtain a Crystal-rarity Charm to unlock Heavenly Gift.
Wails of the Abyss
Meta-progressionSpend on consistent clears before narrow challengesWails of the Abyss are a spendable progression resource used between runs. They support the expanded meta-progression system introduced for Early Access.
Milestone: Spend a cumulative total of 5,000 Wails of the Abyss to unlock Abyssal Spender.
Character Level
Inside a runVery high in the opening minutesCollect experience from defeated enemies to level up and choose cards or upgrades. The level resets with the run, so survival and efficient experience collection determine how quickly a build reaches full strength.
Milestone: Reach Level 50 to unlock Infernal Prowess I.
High Score
Per CirclePursue after reliable 12-minute clearsScore rewards efficient kills, survival, and strong run performance. Limbo and Lust each have a separate 100,000-point mastery achievement.
Milestone: Reach 100,000 in Limbo for Hellish Mastery I and 100,000 in Lust for Hellish Mastery II.
Poet Rescues
Permanent progressionTop permanent-progression priorityEarly Access features four Poet characters in its current progression and card systems. Achievement paths explicitly cover Virgil, Horace, Homer, and Ovid, while Horace, Homer, and Ovid have dedicated rescue milestones.
Milestone: Rescue Horace, Homer, and Ovid; every rescued Poet adds five new abilities to the permanent pool.
Weapon and Mod Cards
Built each run; options expand permanentlyBuild one damage core before spreadingThe current Early Access pool contains more than 40 abilities across Weapon and Mod choices. Weapon Cards define attacks, while Mod Cards enhance a weapon and can be upgraded to Level 3.
Milestone: Complete full hands, equip three Level 3 Mods to one Weapon, and collect every Poet's cards.
Boss Ability Rewards
Permanent unlocks after victoriesRepeat boss clears after the first victoryMajor boss victories add new build options to later runs instead of only ending the current Circle.
Milestone: Each defeated boss adds two new abilities to the permanent pool.
Circle Access
Campaign progressionClear Limbo before farming challengesLimbo is the starting Circle. Continued progression opens Lust, the second complete Circle available in Early Access.
Milestone: Unlock Circle 2, Lust, to earn Winds of Desire.
Recommended Order
Across multiple runsBest overall routeFirst learn Limbo and activate Temples, then rescue Poets, defeat Queen Minos, unlock Lust, and build consistent 12-minute clears. After that, repeat the Malebranche bosses, improve card collections, spend Wails, and pursue score or endurance challenges.
Milestone: Limbo clear, Poet rescues, Queen Minos repeats, Lust unlock, Malebranche clears, Level 50 and 100,000-point runs, then full card collections.

Hell Maiden Early Access Roadmap and Updates
Hell Maiden entered Early Access with two complete Circles, four Poets, four signature weapons, more than 40 abilities, bosses, story content, and permanent progression. AstralShift plans regular fixes and content updates while expanding the game toward all nine Circles.
Hell Maiden Revealed
AstralShift publicly introduced Hell Maiden as a horde-survival action roguelite with deck-building progression, Poet companions, story chapters, and an anime-inspired vision of Dante's Inferno.
Playable Demo and First Hotfix
The public demo offered the complete Limbo Circle, more than 25 abilities, one Poet, six Weapon Cards, and ten Mod Cards. An early hotfix followed with gameplay and quality-of-life corrections.
Original Demo Removed
AstralShift removed the old demo because the Early Access build had diverged through new meta-progression, rebalanced stats, and changed mechanics. The studio plans a new parity demo after the Early Access version stabilizes.
Two Circles Available at Launch
Early Access launched with Limbo and Lust, four Poets of Limbo to find and rescue, four signature weapons, more than 40 abilities, major bosses, quests, story content, and permanent progression between runs.
Launch-Day Progression and Balance Fixes
The launch hotfix fixed progression stopping after Libicocco's clone attack, corrected interface and localization issues, ensured Curse of Dido grants at least one projectile, reduced Queen Minos repeating the same attacks too quickly, and added a DirectX 11 beta launch option.
Circle 3 — Gluttony
The official roadmap targets Gluttony as the next Circle later in 2026, adding another stage of the descent through Hell with new enemies, progression content, and encounters.
Regular Patches and Content Expansion
The developers plan frequent hotfixes, balance changes, quality-of-life improvements, new Circles, Poets, cards, bosses, quests, lore, weapons, perks, and ultimate abilities. The Early Access period is expected to continue for roughly one year or longer as development requires.
All Nine Circles and Endless Mode
The completed version is planned to include all nine Circles of Hell, a larger roster of Poets, more signature weapons, perks, cards, ultimate attacks, bosses, lore, side quests, quality-of-life improvements, and an Endless Mode. The store page also states that the price is expected to increase at full release.
